Mexico City Food Guide: Comal Oculto

Mexico City is home to so many unique eateries that I have to write a blog post for each one individually! First up is one of the most memorable locations: Comal Oculto. Nestled on a residential street in front of Bosque de Chapultepec, Comal Oculto offers a distinctive dining experience. Upon arriving, we were seated at a communal table. Everyone greeted us warmly, making it feel as though we were sitting at a family dinner table. This shared concept creates a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. Sitting among strangers, overhearing conversations, and sharing condiments at the table was a unique experience.

The menu at Comal Oculto features traditional dishes reminiscent of those I enjoy in my Mexican household, with a few elevated touches that stand out. The Café de Olla was the perfect way to start the morning, its aromatic spices pairing beautifully with the city's chilly weather. Alongside my coffee, I enjoyed a flaky, buttery apple pastry with just the right level of sweetness. I also enjoyed the house special gordita with pork, a cactus gordita, a quesadilla, and a flauta with salsa verde. Each item was freshly made to order and packed with incredible flavor. When visiting do not be afraid to try something new! I recommend the Cafe de Olla, flauta, and any of their gorditas!

After researching Comal Oculto they are listed on the Michelin Guide. This restaurant is budget-friendly and a fantastic way to experience Mexican culture in a fun and delicious setting. If you’re in the area, take some time to explore the local stores and street vendors nearby. We stayed about 20 minutes away on foot, and the walk was very pleasant!
